SWANS AT BEAULIEU
BEAULIEU Wood in Co Louth is one of those well kept little secrets - and long may
it remain so. This is partly because of its relative inaccessibility. You take a winding road
along the northern side of the Boyne estuary, past a very large factory which surely qualifies
as one of Ireland’s most spectacular eyesores. And when you get there, it’s invariably mucky.
Added to which the swans can be borderline hostile to visitors who approach without
offerings of food. Yet on a russet autumnal afternoon or a clean crisp spring morning,
it is a haven of tranquillity and a place of respite from the noisy world beyond.
It was on one such morning, as the mist rolled away towards the banks of the river,
that this and the following image were made.
